WEATHER CONDITIONS

Spring Black Bear Hunting:

A wide variety of weather conditions can be expected during the lengthy period of the spring bear hunt. April and early May are known for cold rains and wet snow, while later May and June can provide more comfortable hunting conditions. The warmer temperatures bring on the mosquitoes, however, so good netting apparel is essential. A choice of clothing layers will provide you with some options while planning your evening's bear hunt.

Fall Black Bear Hunting:

Warmer temperatures at the start of the fall black bear season mean that the mosquitoes are still active, so remember to bring your netting. First frosts usually arrive by the fall equinox (September 22), so cooler temperatures are the norm. Bringing a few different layers of clothing will ensure that you are comfortable while hunting no matter what the conditions.

Whitetail Deer Hunting:

Manitoba's weather conditions in October/November can be quite variable.  While some unseasonably warm temperatures may be experienced, you are best to come prepared with a choice of clothing.  Temperatures can range from +50F to -15F (+10C to -26C) . Snow is a definite possibility.  Firearms should be degreased and lightly oiled to prevent freezing.  A good solution is to use a reliable product like G96 Complete Gun Treatment (G96.com) of Paterson, NJ, which has been tested and trusted for proper firearms operation during cold weather by our Royal Canadian Mounted Police.  Dressing in layers is also recommended, with a high-quality base layer (polypropylene long underwear and undershirt), and reliable gloves/mitts and boots. As the closest town is 45 miles away, going there to purchase appropriate clothing will take away valuable deer hunting time.

BRINGING FIREARMS INTO CANADA

There are federal (Canadian) firearms regulations concerning ownership, ammunition, transporting and bringing firearms into Canada. You will have to submit a Non-Resident Firearm Declaration form CAFC 909 upon first entry into Canada.  You should have the form filled out in triplicate before your arrival, but DO NOT SIGN it until you are met by a Canada Customs Officer, who will ask you to sign it at that time.

DO NOT attempt to bring any handguns into Canada.

Please visit the Visitors/Non-Residents section of the Canada Firearms Centre website or phone them at 1-800-731-4000 for information concerning your firearms and the declaration form.
